Lesson 118: Jesus Walks on Water

We are continuing our walk through the stories of Jesus’ miracles. The story we’ll be sharing is the well-known account of Jesus walking on the water. This miracle is recorded in three of the Gospels (Matthew 14:22–36; Mark 6:45–56; John 6:16–21). Enjoy your study, and I’ll send out the narrative soon.

As with all the other miracle stories, one emphasis is Jesus’ authority as God. We’ve seen so far, His authority over sin, sickness, and even death. In this account, Jesus displays His authority over the the natural world, and
even the “natural laws” that govern how this world works.

Jesus’ interaction the men in the boat, and Peter in particular, points to the other key point of this story, as Jesus stated: “Fear not’:

Worldly fear has no place in the realm of faith. And allowing Jesus to become Lord in a way that grows our faith, and dispels fear is a major component of our sanctification.

The verse for this week is:

For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. 2 Tim. 1:7
